Graphic Novel and Comic Creator’s Group – The Writers’ Rooms
At the end of September, there’s a new writers’ group in Iowa City, The Paneled Room, one of The Writers’ Rooms. I’ve been so impressed with The Writers’ Rooms, a non-profit organization that:
ENDEAVORS TO HELP ALL WRITERS WITH THEIR CRAFT. WE STRIVE TO ENCOURAGE AND FOSTER COMMUNITY-SOURCED KNOWLEDGE TO HELP LEAD LITERARY SESSIONS AND PROVIDE A SAFE, POSITIVE WRITING ENVIRONMENT
Each writers’ “room” focuses on a genre and meets 1-2 times/month. Included are: free-writing, science fiction & fantasy, all-genre, romance, LGBTQIA, poetry…and now graphic novel and comic!
I’ll be helping facilitate the group.
I’ve been drawing since I was 5 or so, starting with birds and horses. I discovered comics when I was 10 and started creating my own heroes, influenced heavily by Conan and D&D. It wasn’t until I was much older that I started writing stories set in my own worlds. I’ve never been interested in giving form to other people’s stories, so I never pursued work as an illustrator. In fact, I don’t think of myself as an artist or even an illustrator; I am a storyteller. I just want to tell my stories in every medium I can. Darklaw, the first story in a trilogy, is a novel published in 2015/2017. Darklord is the sequel that will be published as a webcomic and a print graphic novel when complete. Darkwar will be the third in the trilogy, published as a choose-your-own-adventure. Maybe one day I’ll even add animation.
I have a fellow comics creator as co-concierge, and between the two of us, I think we have most of the comics process covered. That is, he is funny and I am not. You can visit Shane at his Tumbler site. His comic “The Flying Wiener” is hysterical. But you have to like puns. Of course, you can see my work here on the Portfolio Page. But you have to like lesbian sex.
If you’re a local graphic novel or comics creator — artist or writer or both — email The Writers Rooms or me. BTW, it’s free. I’ll probably make Paleo cookies ’cause you’re going to make me miss CrossFit.
Here’s the official blurb:
